Blocked drains are a serious problem for a homeowner. They can eventually lead to a complete backup in a pipe, which is not as easy to deal with, especially if the toilet drains are blocked. Working as a plumber in Sydney, I have seen people’s drains become blocked from a number of things. In most cases, the blockage can easily be avoided. In other cases, the blockages were unavoidable.
Hair or Grease
Some people naturally shed more hair than others, which can be a problem for their plumbing system. Hair that washes down the drain can easily become caught in the pipe somewhere, which will make it easier for future hair to get caught as well. Some people also pour grease down the sink after they are done cooking, which is not a healthy practice. Grease will dry out and clog a drain almost immediately. Both of these situations can be corrected by making use of a snake or chemicals to clean out the drain.
Paper Products
Some people think it’s okay to flush napkins or baby wipes down the toilet, but it is not. These things are meant to be thrown in the trash; only toilet paper is meant for the toilet. People who flush these other paper items are likely going to deal with a blocked drain at some point or another. The only paper items that can go down the toilet are those that say they are flushable on the packaging.
Tree Roots
This is a problem that many people don’t expect to be a factor. They feel that their underground pipes are durable enough to withstand Mother Nature, but this isn’t always the case. Tree roots can easily break through a plumbing system underground and cause a blockage that will stop water from flowing in its tracks. In these instances, the pipes will need to be dug out and replaced with new ones, often in another place so the roots don’t affect the pipe again sometime in the future.
These are just some of the most common things that I have seen people deal with when they call for blocked drains in their plumbing system. If you notice that your drains aren’t disposing of water as quickly as they used to, then get in touch with a professional to address the problem before it becomes a complete blockage. It’s easier to deal with when it’s not completely blocked.
